The Nigerian Energy Crisis: What Prospects for Green Recovery and Transatlantic Integration? (Rim Berahab)

Abstract: “This paper examines the challenges facing Nigeria’s energy sector. Despite being rich in natural resources, Nigeria faces an energy crisis with frequent power outages, dilapidated infrastructure and heavy dependence on oil. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the challenges in the energy sector, highlighting the need for diversification of the energy mix, enabling policies and regulatory frameworks. The paper recommends a transformation of Nigeria’s energy sector to limit its exposure to oil price volatility and build a sustainable and resilient energy framework. This will require greater flexibility in energy technologies, increased use of renewable energy, improved energy efficiency, and an overhaul of Nigeria’s economic development model. The paper also highlights the need for a coherent policy and regulatory framework that supports the transition to sustainability.”
